Reason is a unique DAW, rooted in the 90s concept of studio racks for devices like samplers, synthesizers, and effects. The newly announced Reason 13 is packed with new features and improvements.
Table of contents:
A Rich Legacy
First released in 2000 as the successor to the popular ReBirth RB-338, Reason allowed for music creation using virtual emulations of Roland 303, 808, and 909. Reason has always been known for its rich sound palette, based on built-in synthesizers, samplers, and other virtual studio devices. The central feature of the program is a virtual rack where users can place and connect their devices freely.
Significant Updates in Reason 13
Reason Studios, the company behind the virtual rack, has announced several significant updates. The in-app browser has been improved, now allowing it to be detached and moved anywhere on the screen. It also features a new tagging system for better sound organization and easier searching. Other major updates include a redesigned sequencer with editing moved to the second part of the screen, similar to many other DAW applications. This change is expected to improve workflow for most Reason users, who have long requested sequencer enhancements to match the competition. Additionally, Reason now offers light and dark color themes.
Expanded Sound Palette and New Instruments
The sound palette has also been updated with new loops, presets, and drum kits. Reason 13 introduces a new instrument, Polytone, a synthesizer that allows for mixing sound layers. The effects arsenal has been expanded with Riley Space Delay, inspired by tape-based delay effects, lofi reverb, and a saturation/distortion module.
Evolutionary Rather Than Revolutionary
Reason 13 seems more evolutionary than revolutionary, but it remains one of the most user-friendly DAWs. Its skeuomorphic design makes it accessible for those familiar with hardware devices. Reason’s modular structure and the ability to flip the rack to work with audio/CV connections on the back of instruments and effects provide a unique user experience. There is currently no other application (except for modular VST plugins) that allows such flexible and creative connections.
New Tools for Audio Processes
Reason 13 also introduces new tools for audio processes such as sidechaining, stereo widening, and a gain tool to assist with mix balancing and gain staging. Reason 13 will be available on June 18, 2024, as a paid update. Reason+ subscribers will receive the update as part of their subscription.
